Room 5 have been working hard making these eye-catching Christmas wreaths. They have been measuring, cutting and glueing lots of loops of paper to create them.
They have taken a long time but it's worth it because they look AMAZING!
Room 5 are a class of Year 5 and 6 students who are working hard to become Learning Heroes. In term one, our learning theme is "All About Us" and we will be sharing lots of our learning through our class blogs and individual blogs, following the PBS model of LEARN, CREATE, SHARE. Please visit regularly and leave us comments and feedback to help us on our learning journey.

Area and Perimeter Animals
In maths, we have been designing animals and working out their perimeter and area. We have designed our animals on maths paper then we are going to cut them out and try to make them stand up. You can visit our blogs to see more of our designs and what we have learned about perimeter and area. Here are a few photos showing some of our designs. Can you work out what animal they are?

Learning about 3D shapes
In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We were given a mystery net and we had to turn it into a 3D shape, work out what it was called then make a poster about it. Here are some photos of us working collaboratively to construct our shapes and our finished posters.

Cubes
In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We decorated cube nets then folded and glued them to create cubes. It was interesting to see what happened to our patterns.

Sumdog Success for Sajiha!
This is Sajiha's blogpost about her Sumdog results in the latest competition. She has won some very cool outfits this year.
I have come 4th in the Sumdog Competition in Auckland. Sumdog is a free learning game. The competition had started yesterday and I had to answer 1000 questions in a week. My score was 912 out of 1000. I am very proud of my score even though I had a much higher score in the last competition. In each Sumdog competition, each student that takes part in the competition gets a reward chosen from Sumdog. In this competition, each student gets free clothes for their character. I reccomend Sumdog to every student because it has helped me a lot with my maths and I'm sure it'll help you too! Here are a few clothes that I have won:

Maths - Problem Solving
This week we have been working on solving word problems in maths. First, we worked in our thinking group to solve some problems. Then, we chose a problem and created a google drawing showing how we solved it step by step. Here are some examples of our learning.

Animal Kingdom by Sajiha
Sajiha has had lots of creative fun on her Animal Kingdom maths activity. She had to find 5 images of animals that are taller than her and 5 images of animals that are shorter than her. She labelled each animal with how tall it is. Visit her blog to see more of her amazing work (http://pbssajihaa.blogspot.co.nz/). Remember to leave her a comment!

Measurement investigations
For the last two weeks of school, Room 5 students are completing a measurement tic tac toe challenge. There are 9 activities to choose from and students have to complete 3 activities in a straight line from the grid of activities. One activity is called How Long is my Foot? Students have to choose 3 different measurement units, estimate how long their foot will be using each unit of measurement then measure and record their results. These photos show some Room 5 students measuring their feet in different ways. Check out our individual blogs to see our results.

Maths - dice games
Today we had no internet at school after the storm which made our digital learning a bit tricky! We couldn't use our devices so, for maths, Miss T copied some dice games for us to play. Some games were about basic facts, some were about place value and some were about adding or subtracting to make a target number. We had lots of fun playing different games and now we are working on designing our own dice games.

Fractions posters - comparing fractions to half
Room 5 have been learning about comparing and ordering fractions. Today, they worked with a buddy to make a poster about less than half, more than half and equal to half. Each group was given a page of fractions to sort (some groups had pictorial representations of fractions and some groups had numerical fractions). Then they had to present their findings. Check out the slideshow to see photos of Room 5 working collaboratively with their buddies and their finished posters.

Fractions posters
This week Room 5 have been using some of their fractions knowledge to make pizza fraction posters. They had to cut their pizza into equal pieces, add some toppings and work out what fractions their pizza showed. These photos show some of our pizza masterchefs finished work!

Place Value Posters
This week, one of our maths tasks was to make a poster with a buddy. We had to make a poster about the place value of a 4 digit number. We could show the number using place value blocks, write it in expanded form or word form and unpack the number of ones, tens and hundreds in our number. We had lots of fun designing and creating our posters and we had lots of good discussion about our number with our buddy. Check out these photos to see us working and our final products!

Keeping Clever - Basic Facts
This week in maths we have been setting ourselves up for success by reflecting on our basic facts learning. Some of us are working on fast recall of addition and subtraction basic facts (without using our fingers to count!) and some learning heroes are focusing on multiplication and division basic facts. Today Miss Thomas shared some of her fun basic facts games with us. We had to read the instructions and work out how to play each game so we will be able to use them independently when they are in our maths group Keeping Clever boxes. We had lots of fun!
