Kahawai reading activity by Zeba

This is one of the reading activities Zeba chose to complete. She read a story called Kahawai. It was about a girl and her grandma in Auckland and it was set in the future.  In the story it is horrible - Auckland is polluted and the message is that if you don't care about the Earth now, in the future the Earth is going to be polluted. So start planting trees and pick up your rubbish. The Ninth Dragon by Sajiha

Sajiha has been reading a novel called The Ninth Dragon. One of her activities was to make a google presentation about the nine dragons that were mentioned in the story. She had to find out what each dragon represented. Duffy Theatre

Today Duffy Theatre came to visit Panmure Bridge School. The performed a very funny story about Duffy and his friend Rosie. Duffy's uncle, who was a rugby league player, came to visit. Uncle Dingo didn't like reading so Duffy and Rosie tried to encourage him to read. Duffy was reading a book called The King of Colours and he had a special coat to wear that was covered in books. When Uncle Dingo left, Rosie gave him a present. It was a ballet book! When he started reading the book on the plane, he discovered that he really liked reading and he also discovered that ballet could help him to be a better rugby league player.

 These are the messages that we got from the Duffy Theatre performance:
1. Reading grows your brain and your imagination.
2. Keep practising reading and don't give up.
3. Even if you are busy, read a little bit every day.
4. Reading helps you learn new skills and new words.

Research Skills - skimming and scanning

In reading, we are learning how to research. This week we have learned the difference between facts and opinions, how to write open ended questions and how to skim and scan for keywords. Miss T photocopied some information about lions from a non-fiction book and we had to skim and scan with our buddy and highlight the key words. Key words help to keep us focused on finding information to answer our questions. Next week, we will be answering our questions and presenting our information. The Snagglegrollop

What is a Snagglegrollop?  Room 5 have been busy making predictions (making a good guess using clues) about what they think a Snagglegrollop is.  Here are some of our ideas.

Ana - one eye and a long body; eats rats; lives underground in a hole
Calvin - sharp teeth; six legs and three heads
June - nice and kind animal; only 10cm long; lives underground in the forest
Gozan - eight legs and seven eyes; lives in the water; likes to eat humans; size of a whale
Halaiano - humungous - the size of King Kong; lives in a cave; four legs; walks like a spider
Harlem - two long tails; black hairy body; sharp teeth
Reon - eats humans; scaly skin; sounds like King Kong; tall as a 2 storey building
Harry - size of a giant; stronger than the Great Wall of China; whoever looks in to its eyes will turn to stone
Nazella - lives in Africa; loves to eat mice; brown, orange, pink and purple fur
Inotia - cleft chin; big ears; fuzzy tan brown hair
Calvin - three heads; sharp teeth; as long as a bus; six legs
Zeba - never brushes his teeth so he has stinky breath; long tongue; only eats purple lollies
Javeylor - lives in the forest; likes to scare people with its evil eyes
Oh Hsen - two heads and three tails; sharp spikes on the top; lives underground; eats spiders
Mya - half snake and half human; lives in a cave; very very evil; eats meat and fat children
Inotia - eats meat and children; stinky breath; very large ears; lives in a cave; half giant and half vampire
Jessie-Lee - black fur; eats flies; makes a web; lives in the forest
Sajiha - huge, scary animal; lives in forests and jungles; eats anything that gets in his way; smells like rotten fish
Juanita - looks like a snake; mean and grumpy; can eat kids
Gozan - lives in the water; eight eyes and eight legs; looks like a turtle
Thomas - eats every human in sight; 10cm tall; screams like a banshee
