Room 5 have been working hard making these eye-catching Christmas wreaths. They have been measuring, cutting and glueing lots of loops of paper to create them.
They have taken a long time but it's worth it because they look AMAZING!
Room 5 are a class of Year 5 and 6 students who are working hard to become Learning Heroes. In term one, our learning theme is "All About Us" and we will be sharing lots of our learning through our class blogs and individual blogs, following the PBS model of LEARN, CREATE, SHARE. Please visit regularly and leave us comments and feedback to help us on our learning journey.

Moon rocks
Today Room 5 made moon rocks. They worked in groups to measure and mix to make some moon rock dough then they moulded it into interesting shapes. They had to think about what a rock from the moon might look like. Here are some photos of the process and our finished rocks.

Learning to Code
This morning, Room 5 students are learning how to code at code.org. So far they have learned how to move an angry bird through a maze to kill the pig and now some of them are learning to create shapes using angles. If you want to have a try at learning to code, go to code.org, sign in with your google account and click on the courses (we are doing course 2).

Area and Perimeter Animals
In maths, we have been designing animals and working out their perimeter and area. We have designed our animals on maths paper then we are going to cut them out and try to make them stand up. You can visit our blogs to see more of our designs and what we have learned about perimeter and area. Here are a few photos showing some of our designs. Can you work out what animal they are?

Learning about 3D shapes
In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We were given a mystery net and we had to turn it into a 3D shape, work out what it was called then make a poster about it. Here are some photos of us working collaboratively to construct our shapes and our finished posters.

Cubes
In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes. We decorated cube nets then folded and glued them to create cubes. It was interesting to see what happened to our patterns.

Our Film Festival Movie: How to Save the World Before Breakfast
Film Festival Room 5 PBS from Ruth Thomas on Vimeo.
Our film was inspired by our Term 2 Inquiry around sustainability. We realised that there are so many little things that we can do to help look after our planet and if everybody made just a few little changes overall it would make a BIG difference. What changes can you make in your everyday life to help our planet? How could you reduce the rubbish in your lunchbox? Could you walk to school instead of someone dropping you off in a car? Could you encourage your family to use reuseable supermarket bags instead of lots of plastic bags? How can YOU save the world before breakfast?

Sumdog Success for Sajiha!
This is Sajiha's blogpost about her Sumdog results in the latest competition. She has won some very cool outfits this year.
I have come 4th in the Sumdog Competition in Auckland. Sumdog is a free learning game. The competition had started yesterday and I had to answer 1000 questions in a week. My score was 912 out of 1000. I am very proud of my score even though I had a much higher score in the last competition. In each Sumdog competition, each student that takes part in the competition gets a reward chosen from Sumdog. In this competition, each student gets free clothes for their character. I reccomend Sumdog to every student because it has helped me a lot with my maths and I'm sure it'll help you too! Here are a few clothes that I have won:

Space Vocabulary
As part of starting our solar system inquiry, each student in Room 5 had a word related to space to find out about. They had to find out what the word means and write a definition that kids can understand. Do you know anymore interesting words related to space and the solar system? Remember to tell us what the word means so we can increase our vocabulary knowledge.

Maths - Problem Solving
This week we have been working on solving word problems in maths. First, we worked in our thinking group to solve some problems. Then, we chose a problem and created a google drawing showing how we solved it step by step. Here are some examples of our learning.

New topic - our expanding solar system
This term we are learning about the solar system. To get started, each student in Room 5 answered some questions about space to find out what we already knew or thought about space. Next, we worked in groups to summarise all the answers to one of the questions. Then we found out what experts think the answer to that question is and summarised those ideas on another slide. Check out our slideshow to find out our pre-views about space. What do you know about space?

This Food Alphabet was created by Zeba and Sajiha. They have chosen an interesting food for each letter of the Alphabet (they even found an interesting food that starts with the letter x) and included a fact about each food. You can visit their individual blogs to see more of their work. Zeba's blog (http://pbszebas.blogspot.co.nz/) and Sajiha's blog (http://pbssajihaa.blogspot.co.nz/) Remember to leave them a comment with some feedback.
